As Thomas Dolby said "at the tender age of three I was spoke to by machine" but with me it was at the tender age of 9 and I was spoken to by Airfix.  I had the lot as my my parents were relatively wealthy (or so it seemed) and its only in later life that I realised it was because of the simple calculation parents used, times the model series number by an hour and that's how long kids would shut up for whilst building the kit. Of course paint wasn't allowed or needed then as the aim was to build it as fast as possible and the play "taka taka tak" (as my father in law still calls it). Then came early teens, woodwork, metalwork and a belief that I could now progress into painting. Step one, paint every part individually first before assembly. Step two can't wait for it to dry so put it in the oven on a very very low heat to aid drying. Step three spend the rest of the day scraping the remains of a blue MG from the baking tray whilst my father held the television aerial up as it was the only way to get a picture for world cup match of the day (1978 Scotland v Holland and Archie Gemmill scoring). That was a whole Saturday of my life wasted from purchase in the morning to scraping at night A full day of modeling gone, but valuable lessons learned. I could prattle on for hours about all of the kits I have done and blown by various means, my favorite was at Bonfire Night to strap  small rockets to a plane and watch it soar into the air (or what normally happened was it bounced around the grass across the road and generally was probably more fun than if one ever did fly). This of course would not happen today as parents need to be so protective in today's society whereas then I would like to think we were a bit hardier and had at least a bit more sense. I can map my lives hobby interests very simply: Action Man to Airfix to Fishing to  Arsenal To Kettering Town FC ending up with Kettering Town FC Fishing And Airfix Collecting. I am what you call a "poor collector" As I collect everything that I had as a child, if I cannot remember building it I dont want it. With the ultimate goal of collecting every SRN4 in the world and finding those 5 million 1/32 soldiers in boxes I have around my Mothers house in the attic.

My wife's version of Roy Cross's B17G

I think without doubt the best Roy Cross art work there is!
